Tiller

A means of steering - The tiller arm is directly connected to the rudder. The rudder rotates in a bearing in the stern of the boat. Tillers are frequently made in a 'swan's neck shape and often have a removable brass extension with a wooden handle. When attached this is retained with a tiller pin which is often ornate with a brass head depicting anything form a statue of John Bull to a Dolphin (Ours is a cat - well there's a surprise!)
