The Bedroom - Bev's favourite - for SLEEP!!!!
As
you can see from the layout pages the bedroom is at the stern of TCW and
consists of a wardrobe with calorifier under, a wet locker, the electrical panels
and switchgear and of course the bed. The bed as shown on the layout is a crossover
design which extends at night across the width of the boat. Bedside tables are
incorporated either side and there is an overbed locker with reading lights
built in. Additional storage is available under the bed via two doors at the
foot of the bed in its daytime mode.
The Wardrobe serves several purposes and took quite a while to create!
Whilst occupying about 3ft x 3ft of floor space it serves as Laundry space,
calorifier location, main wiring cabinet for both 12V & 240V, wet locker
for waterproofs, tiller etc, Bevs's make up area with mirror and storage draws,
bookshelves, location for inverters, useful shelves for maps and coffee etc
whilst cruising and, of course, a wardrobe! - it turns out to be like the TARDIS
- bigger on the inside than out.
The bed turned out to be the simplest part to make - the sides are ash faced mdf with reinforcing internal braces from chipboard - the whole assembly is screwed to the walls and floor with battens creating a large box with internal dimensions of 4ft 6" width and 4ft depth. The foot of the box (the side running parallel with the boat side had two rectangular holes cut in to act as access for storage beneath the bed. Two doors were made from ash faced MDF, hinged to open downward and retained closed with magnetic catches. Now the tricky part, the crossover bit, this was done with interleaving slats allowing the foot of the bed to be pulled out. Battens were then screwed to the wall to create a lip into which the 'pulled out' bit sits - hopefully pictures will explain this better - I don't have any available at the moment but will have soon. To complete the bed a two piece mattress was bought from the Bed Centre in Tamworth. In the daytime the bed can double as a settee.

To provide added storage, an above bed locker was required, again constructed from ash faced MDF. A simple box construction with routed MDF doors attached by brass finial hinges (Screwfix) and retained shut with magnet catches from the same place.
Bedside cabinets seemed a splendid idea - we
are both avid readers and love to go to bed with a cup of coffee and a book/magazine
so somewhere to put them seemed essential. Two cabinets were created by filling
in the gap between the bed and the wardrobe/bathroom bulkhead. Again apertures
were cut into here to create a door to the cupboard as well as a drawer front.
Links will be supplied to a page describing how the doors were made using a
router.
